Nutrients.. What can they do for you?

Different kinds of foods help our bodies to do different kinds of things. We need all different kinds of food if we are going to help our bodies work properly. What makes foods different from each other are the different kinds of  nutrients in each food. Nutrients help our bodies to work! 
Some foods like meats and beans have proteins. Protein is a nutrient that help us build our muscles. Other foods like butter, and cheese have fat in them. Fat is a nutrient help keep us warm. Fats also help our brains to function.  We get our vitamins and minerals from our fruits and vegetables. Oranges have lots of vitamin C and bananas have tons of potassium.Carbohydrates are in the grains that we eat, like bread and pasta. Carbohydrates are nutrients that give us energy! We need all of the nutrients in order to have healthy bodies and minds.

Fuel For Fun

What would happen if your parents forgot to put gas in the car? What would happen if they decided to put apple juice in the gas tank instead of gas? The car wouldn't work! Just like a car, your body needs fuel to make it work properly, and just like a car, your body needs the right kind of fuel to make sure that it is working the very best that it can. The fuel that your body needs isn't gasoline, it's food! Your body needs a special combination of food to make it work it's very best.  Eating the right amounts of different foods is called a balanced diet. The food pyramid helps show us what kinds of food and how much of each kind we should eating in order to have a balanced diet and fuel our bodies.



When we eat a balanced diet, our bodies have the right amount of fuel and the right kind of fuel. They work better! We have more energy, we can think more clearly, and we can play for a longer amount of time before we need to fuel up again by eating more food!
